Context & facts
Donald Trump is the only U.S. president to serve two non-consecutive terms. His first term ran from January 20, 2017 to January 20, 2021. After losing the 2020 election to Joe Biden, Trump ran again in 2024 — and won. His second term began on January 20, 2025. This calculator counts the total time Trump has been in office, including both terms.
If Trump completes his current term, he will have served a total of 8 years as president — the constitutional maximum. The only other president to serve two non-consecutive terms was Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th president, who served in 1885–1889 and 1893–1897.
Trump's 1st term
Jan 20, 2017 – Jan 20, 2021. 4 years, 1461 days. Key events: Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (2017), COVID-19 pandemic (2020), first impeachment (2019), second impeachment (2021). Lost 2020 election to Joe Biden.
Trump's 2nd term
Jan 20, 2025 – Jan 20, 2029. Currently ongoing. Trump became the first president since Grover Cleveland to win the presidency after previously losing a re-election bid. His 2024 campaign focused on immigration and economic policy.
The 22nd Amendment
Ratified in 1951, the 22nd Amendment limits presidents to two terms total. Since Trump is now in his second term, he is constitutionally barred from running for president again in 2028 or any future election.
Historical comparison
FDR served 12 years and 39 days — the longest of any U.S. president. He died in office in 1945. This prompted the 22nd Amendment. Conversely, William Henry Harrison served only 31 days before dying of pneumonia.
